2018 Buick Regal Sportback

Sedans dying is a good thing. When we regain sanity and stop buying crossovers and pickups by default, bring on the hatchbacks, liftbacks, and wagons.

Blargh, I tend to like the looks of sedans much better compared to liftbacks. :( Liftbacks usually have the proportions of the arse end all wrong.

Nowadays all the sedans have a fastback profile anyway, due to trying to get the drag coefficient down, so... really I’m just asking for the rear glass to be attached to the trunk lid.

Eh, I’d say there’s still a fair amount of 3-box design saloons with a clearly defined trunk. Main ranges of premium German offerings tend to stick to that classic formula for the most part.

In the US, trunk definition is almost gone, outside of that segment.

And, there’s also been notchback liftbacks:

Of course, that particular one was specifically marketed as not looking like a hatchback while actually being one, and it wasn’t particularly successful, but...

You can have a car that looks like a sedan, you just get a more useful cargo opening.

Crossovers are just more practical wagons/hatchbacks. They aren’t going away, but wagons/hatchbacks are.

It’s funny, though, there’s a shitload of “crossovers” that are just butch hatchbacks with a 1-2" lift kit.

We’re another fuel crisis away from that lift kit being taken off.

Gas mileage isn’t affected enough to matter. The ingress/egress is much better on crossovers.

This is where I guess I suggest air suspension.

Lift the vehicle a few inches (beyond what the suspension geometry is designed for in normal operation) to get the good ingress/egress, then drop it for handling and aerodynamics.

(Worth noting that the new Ram 1500 with air suspension actually does drop the suspension at highway speeds...)

All I know is I want a wiper on my rear window.

They are pretty nice to have.

Although I wish my Prius had a wiper on the lower rear window, too...

Yep. Skoda have put them on pretty much all of their cars, but for the Superb they made it a no cost option (they can’t be retrofitted later on apparently as all the wiring is put in on the build). The designer of the car didn’t like the rear wiper as he felt it disturbs the clean flowing lines. But it was a no brainer to have it.

I totally agree. It’s not like many saloons don’t look like liftbacks already.

Take the Ford Mondeo/Fusion for the most obvious example.

I can understand the difference between the lift back and the estate, but a saloon that looks like a lift back unless much less convenient and practical.

Crossovers are just ugly wagons/hatchbacks that have taller fronts to confuse regulators so they done need to meet as strict of fuel economy standards that are designed to penalize cars for being cars. Many don’t even have more ground clearance than a car. Average cars of even the 80s-90s had the same (if not more) ground clearance as modern CUVs.

That’s much more easily accomplished.
